How to Be Popular

popular

Meg Cabot’s How to be Popular is this month’s featured title at readergirlz. Meg will be chatting at the readergirlz forum on Thursday, December 18th at 6pm EST (9pm EST). It’s certain to be a packed chat, and you’ve still got some time to read How to be Popular before the big event.

Steph Landry is not popular, and she really, really wants to be. After a totally humiliating incident five years ago, she has been the postergirl for loserdom at her school, and frankly, she’s tired of it. Steph just wants to know what it’s like not to be the laughing stock, how it feels to be accepted by the It Crowd. Good thing she has a secret weapon: a book she found in her step-grandma’s attic called How to Be Popular. Steph believes that simply by following the instructions in this book, she will become the popular girl she knows she can be. What will happen to her loyal-but-somewhat-nerdy pals Becca and Jason along the way? Will Steph’s transformation work? Will it last? Grab How to Be Popular. Read it. Decide what popular means to you and what you wish it meant in high school and in the real world.

It was fun to read a novel that doesn’t take itself too seriously, given that I tend to read a lot of heavier books. How to be Popular is like a perfect palate cleanser, a yummy little dish of tangy sorbet to be consumed between more intense courses. This is not to say that there aren’t important issues being explored here (self respect, valuing friendship, integrity, communication, interpersonal ability) it’s just all wrapped up in a bright and sparkly package. Of course, because it’s Meg Cabot, you’re going to laugh. That’s a given. Also, you’ll find characters you’d like to have as your friends and you’ll feel like you’re in the hands of the smartest, sassiest kind of writer around. What’s not to like?

I suggest reading this title before / after / alongside Jennifer Ziegler’s How NOT to Be Popular, another book that makes you reconsider and revise your personal definition of what it means to be popular. Then swing by the readergirlz forum on Thursday and state your mind. See you there!
